Capitol Park Cleanup
In September of 2009, offender work crews from the Delaware Department of Correction’s (DOC) Central Violation of Probation (CVOP) Center in Dover completed a beautification project
on public property near the Capitol Park development off of U.S. 113.
The crews collected trash and trimmed low-hanging tree branches and overgrown bushes, as well as vines growing along a fence that surrounds a playground area.
The need for the project was brought to the attention of CVOP Warden Jim Hutchins by 32nd District Rep. E. Bradford “Brad” Bennett.
“Providing community service work, like the project near Capitol Park, is a key component of offender rehabilitation at the CVOP,” said Hutchins. “After touring the area with Rep. Bennett it was obvious that work needed to be done, which we can proudly say was accomplished within a few weeks.”
Rep. Bennett said that in addition to cleaning up the park, he asked the Department of Transportation to install a sign indicating that there is a maximum $500 fine for dumping, which hopefully will act as a deterrent against future littering.
“As a parent of two young children, I know that kids deserve the opportunity to play in a safe and clean environment,” Rep. Bennett said. “Being able to help clean up this park and provide a welcoming atmosphere for kids is one of the real joys of being in state government. Hopefully this small effort will give the children of this community a chance to enjoy the outdoors and have fun.”
Rep. Bennett said that he is continuing to work with the Capitol Park Civic Association to upgrade the entire playground and park for children and to improve the quality of life for residents of the community.
